Saraswati Sadhana Yojana in Gujarat Budget 2025-26
Gujarat’s Finance Minister, Shri Kanu Desai, presented the Budget 2025-26 digitally on 20th February 2025 using the National eVidhan Application (NeVA) at the State Assembly. It marks a significant step towards paperless governance. While delivering the budget speech, FM said “Under the Saraswati Sadhana Scheme, a provision of Rs. 84 crore has been made to provide free bicycles to 1 lakh 25 thousand girl students from socially and educationally backward classes and economically backward classes, along with 13,600 girl students from Scheduled Castes studying in the 9th standard”.
What is Saraswati Sadhana Yojana?
Gujarat government implements Saraswati Sadhana Yojana to provide free bicycles to girls belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Developing Castes studying in standard 9th. Department of Social Justice & Empowerment is the nodal dept. to implement free cycle yojana for SC girls in Gujarat.
Gujarat Sarasvati Sadhana Yojana aims to improve the gross enrollment ratio for class IX. This scheme would promote girls education as the problem of lack of access, lower participation and bad quality facilities would be tackled through this Saraswati Sadhana Scheme. The status of girls education and thus the overall quality of girls education would be improved.

Eligibility criteria for Saraswati Sadhana Yojana in Gujarat
Applicant must be a permanent resident of Gujarat state.
Girls belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Developing Caste Category are only eligible.
Girls who are studying in std: 9 can only apply.
Income criteria is Rs. 6,00,000/- for rural area applicants and Rs. 6,00,000/- for urban area applicants.
It is important to note that only those girls who fulfills these conditions would get free bicycles.
Vidya Sadhana Yojana in Gujarat Budget 2025-26
On 20th Feb 2025, Finance Minister presented Gujarat Budget 2025-26. While delivering the budget speech, FM said “A provision of ₹ 15 crore for providing free bicycles to 33,000 tribal girl students studying in 9th standard under the Vidya Sadhana Yojana”.
What is Vidya Sadhana Yojana?
Due to remote location of higher secondary schools, ST girl students tend to drop-out of education after completion of Std. VIII. To motivate the girl students to study further after completion of Std. VIII and continue their study even if the school is located a few kilometres away from their residence. This scheme was firstly launched in the year 1995 and is running since then in all districts of the state.
Eligibility Criteria for Vidya Sadhana Yojana
Applicant must be a permanent resident of Gujarat state.
Girls belonging to Scheduled Tribe (ST) Category are only eligible.
Girls who are studying in std: 9 can only apply.
Income criteria is Rs. 1,20,000/- for rural area applicants and Rs. 1,50,000/- for urban area applicants.
It is important to note that only those girls who fulfills these conditions would get free bicycles.
Need for Gujarat Free Cycle Yojana 2025
Secondary education (10th class) is a crucial stage in education as it lays the foundation of students towards higher education and even towards working. As per the survey reports, most of the girls belonging to deprived sections of the society left education due to lack of proper facilities. So, in order to encourage girls to pursue further studies, the state govt. has launched Gujarat Free Cycle Yojana to provide free bicycles to different category of girls studying in Class 9th in govt. / govt. aided schools.
While Saraswati Sadhana Yojana provides bicycles to girls from scheduled caste and developing caste, Vidya Sadhana Yojana provides bicycles to tribal girl students. Both these schemes, which are commonly called as Gujarat free cycle yojana aims to reduce the drop out rate of girls from deprived sections of the society.
